Loyola gymnasium has officially reopened!

December 7, 2023

We are thrilled to announce that after six months of dedicated work, the Loyola gymnasium has officially reopened for physical education classes. This marks the initial phase of our comprehensive athletics’ complex renovation, which began in June of 2023. Ongoing efforts will soon see the completion of basement locker rooms, the outdoor hardscape and landscape, and air conditioning upgrades, with the anticipated conclusion of the outdoor work set for 2024.

Loyola President Marcelle DeFreitas expressed gratitude, noting, “Our physical education teachers and students have demonstrated incredible adaptability throughout this school year. Teachers have showcased creativity and flexibility in delivering their curriculum, coaches have found ways to practice without a gymnasium, and our students have shown remarkable understanding. We are fortunate to have the continued leadership and guidance of Broccolini Construction, ensuring this project stays on time and within budget.

President DeFreitas also emphasized the significance of Loyola’s partnership with Concordia University throughout these renovations. “Concordia has always been a steadfast ally of Loyola. During these renovations, they generously offered Loyola students and staff access to their facilities and welcomed us with open arms. Their support underscores once again that they are wonderful neighbours, and we extend our heartfelt gratitude for their generosity.

Originally completed in 1978 as the cornerstone of Loyola’s current campus, the Loyola gymnasium has been a central hub for activity and camaraderie for generations of Loyola students and their families. The renovation's funding stems from the generous financial support of the Loyola community and the commendable efforts of the Loyola High School Foundation, which transferred $5,000,000 in donations raised by the high school to make this project a reality. Their dedication and strategic stewardship of funds have been instrumental in ensuring the success of this endeavor.

Scott Corbett, Executive Director of Advancement, underscored the community support of this renovation “This project exemplifies the power of philanthropy and stands as a significant achievement in Loyola’s strategic plan. The collective contributions of time, skill, and financial support from our community showcase what is possible when we unite in support of Loyola High School.”

We eagerly anticipate providing you with more updates in the upcoming months. In the meantime, here is a glimpse of the newly refurbished gymnasium.
