Loyola's Inaugural Participation in Girls for the Cure

October 7, 2024

The 2024 Girls for the Cure Walk, dedicated to raising funds for women’s cancers, held special significance this year. It marked both the 30th anniversary for the Girls for the Cure and Loyola’s first-ever participation in this vital initiative, coinciding with the 100th anniversary of St. Mary’s Hospital.

In the lead-up to the event, the Loyola girls embraced the challenge of raising funds for the St. Mary’s Hospital Foundation through personalized web pages, resulting in an impressive total of $36,479 raised! This effort exemplified Loyola’s ethos of women for others, showcasing their commitment to making a positive difference in the community.

On September 26, 91 Loyola girls donned their GFC T-shirts and pink cowboy hats to embark on a 5 km journey to Molson Percival Stadium. They made a grand entrance into the stadium with their GFC school banner, joining over 1,200 girls from other participating schools to celebrate their collective fundraising efforts in the fight against cancer.

The event was filled with inspiration and joy, featuring special guests, including cancer survivors from St. Mary’s Hospital, Vinny and Shannon from Virgin Radio, Youppi, DJ Fafa Khan, and local country music star Brittany Kennel. Attendees listened to heartfelt testimonials from survivors and an uplifting performance by Brittany Kennel. A poignant moment of silence, accompanied by Sarah McLachlan’s “I Will Remember You,” honoured the brave women who have lost their battle against cancer, making the occasion both a celebration and a time for reflection.

This year's Girls for the Cure Walk was not just an event; it was a powerful reminder of community, hope, and the ongoing fight against women's cancers. Loyola is proud to have participated, standing united for a cause that resonates deeply with its mission of empowering women for others. Initiatives like this help shape our girls into the leaders of tomorrow, instilling in them the values of compassion, service, and commitment to making a positive impact in the world.
